What are STEM Learning and FOCUS STEM Classes?
STEM Learning is an approach that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop key skills including: problem solving. creativity. STEM learning goes far beyond “building a robot”, or playing games on a computer. For example, STEM Learning can incorporate problem solving to cooking or gardening. STEM Learning can also allow for creativity in testing building materials or even using imagination with solving Math problems in class.
STEM classes allow for 4 students per class. Classes promote a love a learning and discovery. ELA focused classes use a picture book read-aloud to set a theme for the day. Activities vary to include letters, sounds, and words. Some activities include fine motor skills including cutting and tracing while others include gross motor skills like hopping and skipping. Activities encourage socialization and problem-solving.
Students are encouraged to work in groups, problem-solve together and show compassion when working with others. In order to apply critical thinking, data analysis and complex problem-solving skills to a variety of projects and experiments, groups are created based on ability and interpersonal skill level. Each student will have the opportunity to identify and highlight strengths while feeling a challenge.
Each class is different and allows for students to experience something new every time! All students leave class with a finished product or the tools necessary to complete the days task at home.
